Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz Keynotes 18th Annual Broward County Transit Luncheon

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts was bustling with excitement on Monday, December 3, 2012 with 160 of Broward County’s movers and shakers filled the club level and lobby for the 18th Annual Broward County Transit Luncheon.

Hosted by the Transportation Management Association (TMA) Executive Board, the luncheon began as Alan Hooper, TMA Board Member introduced Greg Stewart, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). Stewart’s demeanor and tone emoted both passion and a tremendous sense of accomplishment as he delivered remarks highlighting the work of the DDA, TMA, and MPO, which have all worked together to make The WAVE Streetcar project a reality.

As Mayor John P. “Jack” Seiler took the stage he was joined by his fellow Fort Lauderdale City Commissioners to welcome, keynote speaker, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Together, they presented her with an award recognizing her dedication and steadfast efforts to secure an $18 million federal grant to construct The WAVE Streetcar project.

The Congresswoman began by noting that traffic and the economy are currently the two biggest concerns for Florida residents. Speaking of her support and affection for Broward County, she so elegantly stated that transportation improvements create jobs as well as improve mobility and infrastructure.

“Public transportation is an integral part of our society,” stated Wasserman-Schultz, “we must increase our investment now to serve the current and increasing population.”

Wasserman-Schultz concluded her remarks by not only issuing a heartfelt thank you to Mayor Seiler and Broward’s local elected officials, but also injecting further hope and encouragement by noting that she would be returning to a seat on the House Appropriations Committee and in a strong position to help support future Broward County transportation improvements.

The TMA Executive Board would like to thank its event sponsors AMEC, Hooper Construction, Fuentes Rodriguez Consulting, Gunster, SYSTRA, United Street Car, SOJ, LTK, Transystems, Atlantic Bus Sales, Craven & Thompson, Parsons, and T. Y. Lin.
